Garmin built the Instinct to cop a beating, but the silicone strap it ships with wears out long before the watch does. The good news? Swapping it takes about two minutes, and a replacement starts from $29. This guide covers which bands fit your Instinct, what each material is actually like to live with, and how to change one over without scratching your lugs.
Which bands fit the Garmin Instinct?
The original Garmin Instinct uses 22mm watch bands attached with spring bars. That covers every edition of the first-generation watch: standard, Solar, Camo, Tactical, Surf and Esports. They all share the same 45mm case and the same lug width, so any band in our Garmin Instinct watch bands collection fits the lot.
One thing to get right before you order: not every watch with "Instinct" on the box takes the same size. If you own a newer model, here's where you need to be instead:
- Instinct 2 (45mm) — also 22mm, but shaped slightly differently at the lugs. Grab yours from the Instinct 2 bands collection
- Instinct 2S (40mm) — the smaller case takes a narrower 20mm band. See Instinct 2S bands
- Instinct 2X Solar (50mm) — the big unit needs a 26mm band. See Instinct 2X Solar bands
- Instinct 3 — covered in our Instinct 3 watch bands collection
Still not sure which Instinct you've got? Flip the watch over. The model name is printed on the case back, or you can check under Settings > About on the watch itself.
Silicone: the everyday workhorse
If you wear your Instinct for running, swimming, the gym, or a job site, silicone is the sensible pick. It shrugs off sweat and salt water, rinses clean under a tap, and dries in minutes. Our quick change silicone bands start from $29 and come in a stack of colours, so you can finally retire that faded graphite strap.
Prefer the traditional setup? The replacement straps with spring bars included (from $39) give you fresh pins along with the band, which is worth it if your originals have stretched or rusted.
Leather: for when the watch leaves the trail
An Instinct with a leather band is a surprisingly good look. The rugged case dresses up nicely, and you keep all the tracking without looking like you're about to summit something during a client meeting. Our leather quick change bands ($49) use quick release pins, so you can run silicone through the week and clip the leather on for dinner without touching a tool.
One honest caveat: leather and lap swimming don't mix. Keep it for dry days and it'll age beautifully.
Metal: stainless steel and titanium
For something with real heft, the Boss stainless steel band ($68) turns the Instinct into a proper bracelet watch. Links are removable, so you can size it to your wrist at home.
If weight is the concern, titanium is the answer. The Evo titanium band ($129) gives you the metal look at a fraction of the weight of steel, which matters on a watch you wear sixteen hours a day. It's the priciest band we sell for the Instinct, and it's the one customers tend not to take off again.
We also stock nylon NATO-style straps for the Instinct from time to time. They sell out quickly, so if the style appeals, check the full collection for current stock.
How to change a Garmin Instinct band
The original Instinct attaches its band with standard spring bars, and swapping them is a five-minute job:
- Lay the watch face down on a soft cloth.
- Use a spring bar tool to compress the pin at one end of the band and pop it free of the lug.
- Repeat on the other end, then remove the second band the same way.
- Seat the new band's spring bar in one lug hole, compress the other end with the tool, and ease it into place until it clicks.
- Give the band a firm tug to confirm both pins are seated before you wear it.
If your spring bars are bent, corroded, or have gone missing entirely, our spring bar replacement kit with tools ($19.95) includes fresh pins and the removal tool in one pack. Quick release bands skip the tool altogether: a small lever on the underside of the band lets you swap with your fingernail.
Worth grabbing while you're here
A new band is the most common reason people land on this page, but a few other bits keep an ageing Instinct going strong:
- Tempered glass screen protector ($19.95) — cheap insurance against rock scrapes and door frames
- Rugged protective cover case ($14.95) — wraps the bezel for mountain biking and worksite duty
- Replacement charger and data cable (from $24) — because the original always walks off
- Refuel charger stand ($49) — gives the watch a proper home on your bedside table

Frequently asked questions
What size band does the Garmin Instinct use?
The original Garmin Instinct uses 22mm bands attached with spring bars. This applies to all first-generation editions: standard, Solar, Camo, Tactical, Surf and Esports.
Do Instinct 2 bands fit the original Instinct?
The standard 45mm Instinct 2 also uses 22mm bands, so widths match. The lug moulding differs slightly between generations though, so for a guaranteed fit, buy from the collection that matches your exact model.
Can I wear a replacement band swimming?
Silicone bands, yes. They're waterproof, dry fast, and rinse clean of chlorine and salt. Leave leather bands at home for pool sessions.
Do I need tools to change my Instinct band?
For standard spring bar bands, you'll need a spring bar tool, which is included in our replacement kits. Quick change bands have a built-in release lever and need no tools at all.
Do you ship Garmin Instinct bands Australia-wide?
Yes. We ship from Melbourne to every state and territory, with free express post on orders over $85.
