Why is the 2X a different band size from the Instinct 2?

Bigger case, wider lugs. The Instinct 2X Solar is 50mm across and takes 26mm, the standard Instinct 2 is 45mm and takes 22mm, and the Instinct 2S is 40mm and takes 20mm. The three are the same watch in three sizes, so band width follows the case rather than the model name.

Can I use any 26mm band, or does it have to be a Garmin one?

No - Any 26mm strap with standard spring bars will physically fit, but the spring bars will most likely be under-sized. These need a thick heavy duty spring bars, not found on normal watch bands. We also have replacements straps that are shaped for the 2X and leave no gaps

Will a Garmin QuickFit band fit the Instinct 2X Solar?

Yes. The Instinct 2X Solar takes QuickFit 26 bands, the same size used across Garmin's larger Fenix and Epix watches, so a QuickFit strap from one of those will attach. QuickFit is sized by width, and 26 is the number to look for. Standard 26mm spring bar straps fit too, giving you both options.

How do I tell a 2X Solar from a standard Instinct 2?

Look for the flashlight. The 2X Solar has an LED torch built into the top of the case, which no other Instinct 2 has, and at 50mm it is visibly larger than the 45mm standard model. The model name also appears in Garmin Connect. If your current strap measures 22mm, you have the standard Instinct 2.
